Pak Chung Cheng,
born in Hong Kong, became
conductor of the String Orchestra
(then the Cadet Orchestra) in 1978.
He received his Bachelor of Arts
Degree in violin performance with
highest honors from the Chinese
University of Hong King in 1973.
Following graduation, he came to the
United States to further his musical
studies. In 1975, he received a
Master of Music degree from Southern
Illinois University with a
concentration in Violin Performance.
During his two years at SIU, he also
studied pedagogy under Suzuki expert
John Kendall. Since 1975, Mr.
Cheng has been a Suzuki violin
instructor at the Universty of
Memphis. he is an active Suzuki
clinician throughout the Mid-South.
Mr. Cheng was a member of the Memphis
Symphony from 1975-1985. He has
also been a member of the Poco
Philharmonic Orchestra, the Victoria
Chamber Orchestra of Hong Kong, and
the St. Louis Philharmonic. In
addition to teacher, performing, and
conducting, Mr. Cheng is a string
instrument repairman. He has
been repairing stringed instruments
since the age of 15. His
teachers include the late William
Moenig Jr., internatioanlly renowned
in his field.
